  Blaze damages East Side home Tuesday

  A fire on the city's East Side has left one resident without a home Tuesday, but didn't result in any injuries. The fire happened at a home in the 100 block of Leon Street just after 2 a.m. Tuesday. According to the Madison fire department, when firefighters arrived, they could see flames shooting from two sides of the home. Officials say the fire was so strong, firefighters weren't able to go inside. "Luckily the occupant did get out," said Madison Fire Department spokesperson Bernadette Galvez. "When 911 called, the occupant said they had to put the fire out and hung up, so that right there put an alarm out to the firefighters and wanted to make sure everyone was out and for sure the resident was out of the home." "Thank God she got out of the house safe and sound," said Galvez. A neighbor said the woman has lived in the house for more than 50 years. Neighbors told WISC-TV they called the woman's daughter to come take care of her. Fire officials estimate the blaze caused $160,000 in damage to the home and its contents.

  Feds: Use local firewood in Wis. national forest

  Federal officials are reminding campers in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest to use local firewood to ensure a tree-eating beetle doesn't spread. The emerald ash borer, an Asian beetle that kills ash trees, travels by way of infested firewood or nursery stock transported from one location to another. Forest officials are reminding campers to use only firewood gathered within the forest, purchased from a vendor within 25 miles of the forest or certified by the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

  Real estate market continues to rebound

  The real estate market in Wisconsin continues to rebound. Figures from the Wisconsin Realtors Association show sales of existing homes rose 19 1/2 percent in April, the 10th consecutive month of double-digit sales growth in the state. The median sales prices rose slightly, up 2.4 percent. Association president Michael Theo told the Journal Sentinel the state may have finally "turned the corner" on sales. But, prices are another thing. Plenty of homes are still on the market in Wisconsin, including foreclosure properties. For the first four months of the year, prices are down about 1 percent. There were 5,218 homes sold in April, compared with 4,365 in April last year. The median price rose 2.4 percent statewide to $128,000 from $125,000 a year ago.

  Baraboo foundation streams video of crane chicks

  The International Crane Foundation in Baraboo is giving the world a chance to watch newly hatched whooping cranes grow. The foundation has launched its Crane Chick Cam, a streaming video of the endangered youngsters. Viewers will be able to see young chicks being kept warm under heat lamps. As the birds get older, they'll have access to outdoor runs where they can strengthen their leg and flight muscles. The camera will also show viewers how researchers raise the chicks by dressing in full-body suits with one hand shaped like an adult crane's face and beak. Whooping cranes nearly became extinct in 1941, when their number dwindled to only 15. Now there are about 550. The cranes stand 5 feet tall, have snowy white plumage and have nearly 8-foot wingspans.

  Barrett calls on Walker to release emails related to investigation

  Republican Gov. Scott Walker said his challenger Tom Barrett is making a "desperate attack" by requesting that he release more emails from his time as Milwaukee County executive related to an issue being examined as part of a secret investigation. Barrett on Monday called on Walker to release emails related to a secret wireless Internet system installed near his office, which has been part of the ongoing investigation into county workers doing campaign work during public time. The Barrett campaign pointed to the criminal complaint against former Walker aide Kelly Rindfleisch, which noted, "the unofficial email system was routinely used by selected insiders within the Walker administration. The existence of this emails system, which was based on personal internet email accounts and was used for both official and unofficial purposes, was never disclosed to county employees outside a closely held group within the Walker administration." "The people of Wisconsin deserve to know if their governor is involved in felonious activity or is the target of a criminal investigation," Barrett said. "Walker is obviously trying to run out the clock and avoid accountability, but voters deserve the full truth before they go to the polls. The governor can finally put the doubts to rest by simply disclosing for the public the emails that have been turned over to prosecutors." But Walker said he has talked more about the ongoing John Doe probe "more than any person has in the state of Wisconsin." "I think most people will see it for what it is. They'll see it's a desperate campaign, and a desperate candidate, trying desperately to have people ignore the record of failure in Milwaukee and ignore the fact that our reforms are working," Walker said.
