05/22/2012 10:58 AM Feingold to rally early voting for Democrats Former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold plans to lead an effort to get people to vote early in the Gov. Scott Walker recall election. Feingold planned to meet with voters Tuesday afternoon in Middleton to increase awareness about absentee voting options, voter registration and other information. Feingold planned to lead the group to the Middleton clerk's office to vote. A similar event was planned in Eau Claire led by state Sen. Kathleen Vinehout and Pat Kreitlow, a former state senator who is running for Congress in the 7th district. In-person absentee voting began Monday and runs through June 1. Walker faces Democrat Tom Barrett in the June 5 recall election. Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and four other Republican lawmakers also face recall votes.
05/22/2012 10:45 AM Association: Wisconsin's real estate market continues to rebound The real estate market in Wisconsin continues to rebound. Figures from the Wisconsin Realtors Association show sales of existing homes rose 19 1/2 percent in April, the 10th consecutive month of double-digit sales growth in the state. The median sales prices rose slightly, up 2.4 percent. Association president Michael Theo told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the state may have finally "turned the corner" on sales. But, prices are another thing. Plenty of homes are still on the market in Wisconsin, including foreclosure properties. For the first four months of the year, prices are down about 1 percent. There were 5,218 homes sold in April, compared with 4,365 in April last year. The median price rose 2.4 percent statewide to $128,000 from $125,000 a year ago.
05/22/2012 10:43 AM Baraboo foundation streams video of crane chicks The International Crane Foundation in Baraboo is giving the world a chance to watch newly hatched whooping cranes grow. The foundation has launched its Crane Chick Cam, a streaming video of the endangered youngsters. Viewers will be able to see young chicks being kept warm under heat lamps. As the birds get older, they'll have access to outdoor runs where they can strengthen their leg and flight muscles. The camera will also show viewers how researchers raise the chicks by dressing in full-body suits with one hand shaped like an adult crane's face and beak. Whooping cranes nearly became extinct in 1941, when their number dwindled to only 15. Now there are about 550. The cranes stand 5 feet tall, have snowy white plumage and have nearly 8-foot wingspans. 05/22/2012 10:41 AM Man dies in Dodge County motorcycle crash A 50-year-old man from Iron Ridge has died in a motorcycle crash in Dodge County. The Wisconsin State Patrol said the crash occurred sometime between Sunday and Monday afternoon, but the exact time of crash is currently unknown. Authorities said a motorcyclist was fatally injured while traveling westbound on Pond Road in the Town of Rubicon. The motorcyclist failed to negotiate a left curve, veered off of the roadway and struck a tree, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol. The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of family members.
05/22/2012 10:34 AM Union Cab installs solar panels to help power fleet A company on Madison's east side is putting its roof to work to save money. Union Cab installed solar panels on its building on Monday. The installation was part of a project to highlight the state's solar technology. A spokesperson for the taxi company said the panels will contribute about 5 percent of its electricity needs -- enough to power 1.5 of its minivans. "The sun is non-partisan, non-denominational and an equal-opportunity provider. Let's use it wisely," said Kate Schachter. The panels should last about 40 years, she said. The American Solar industry is looking to benefit from a federal decision this week, which will put a tariff on Chinese solar panel imports.
