| New facility helps vets survive civilian life |
|
Hoping to gain back the freedoms they fought for while easing their transition into civilian life, Madison-area veterans have a new place to call their own.
Dryhootch Madison, a coffee house and resource center for veterans, recently held its grand opening.
Organizers call Dryhootch a movement to help veterans reconnect with the community. Those attending the grand opening seemed to agree.
"I think the Dryhootch is a good thing because it's a sober place to be for veterans to interact with others from different foreign wars," said Army veteran Terry Curry.
"A nurse from the VA said it would be a good place to come check out and there would be a lot of resources for veterans," added Blair Barrett, a Navy veteran.
Veteran and coffee barista Jeff Kriesel said Dryhootch’s mission is to act as an ally for vets having a tough time transitioning back to civilian life.
"We're going to help people with resumes, clothes if they need it for interviews, computers for their ready use, counselors, support groups," said Kriesel. "We have legal counselors on board. If you need it, we can find it for you."
Offering vets the use of meeting rooms and a multimedia center, Dryhootch organizers are hoping that their blend of coffee and camaraderie will be the perfect combination for Madison-area vets.
"Veterans need a place like this all over where they can come and be safe and interact with other veterans and have community based support," said Barrett. "So it's really good for veterans."
Organizers at Dryhootch said they were fortunate to lease their Madison space for free this first year. Dryhootch Madison is located at 8025 Excelsior Dr. on Madison's far West Side.
Madison’s Dryhootch is the third location in the state. The other two are both in Milwaukee.

| Feds: Use local firewood in Wisconsin national forest |
|
Federal officials are reminding campers in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest to use local firewood to ensure a tree-eating beetle doesn't spread.
The emerald ash borer, an Asian beetle that kills ash trees, travels by way of infested firewood or nursery stock transported from one location to another.
Forest officials are reminding campers to use only firewood gathered within the forest, purchased from a vendor within 25 miles of the forest or certified by the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

| Progressive group says it's 'all in' for recall |
|
Progressive advocacy organization Democracy for America says it is all-in for Tom Barrett in the June 5 recall targeting Gov. Scott Walker.
The political action committee founded by former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean issued a statement Tuesday saying its members plan to knock on 80,000 doors and make 100,000 calls over the next two weeks.
Officials with Democracy for America said over the past 15 months it has already made more than 382,000 calls and knocked on 123,000 doors.
The group's chairman, Jim Dean, said the election will come down to how many Democrats turn out in Dane County, where the liberal capital city of Madison is located. He said turnout efforts will be focused on Madison, Racine and Eau Claire.

| Feingold to rally early voting for Democrats |
|
Former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold plans to lead an effort to get people to vote early in the Gov. Scott Walker recall election.
Feingold planned to meet with voters Tuesday afternoon in Middleton to increase awareness about absentee voting options, voter registration and other information. Feingold planned to lead the group to the Middleton clerk's office to vote.
A similar event was planned in Eau Claire led by state Sen. Kathleen Vinehout and Pat Kreitlow, a former state senator who is running for Congress in the 7th district.
In-person absentee voting began Monday and runs through June 1.
Walker faces Democrat Tom Barrett in the June 5 recall election. Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and four other Republican lawmakers also face recall votes.

| Association: Wisconsin's real estate market continues to rebound |
|
The real estate market in Wisconsin continues to rebound.
Figures from the Wisconsin Realtors Association show sales of existing homes rose 19 1/2 percent in April, the 10th consecutive month of double-digit sales growth in the state. The median sales prices rose slightly, up 2.4 percent.
Association president Michael Theo told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the state may have finally "turned the corner" on sales.
But, prices are another thing. Plenty of homes are still on the market in Wisconsin, including foreclosure properties. For the first four months of the year, prices are down about 1 percent.
There were 5,218 homes sold in April, compared with 4,365 in April last year. The median price rose 2.4 percent statewide to $128,000 from $125,000 a year ago.
