  Reedsburg youth hockey treasurer arrested on embezzlement charges

  Reedsburg police said they arrested the treasurer for the Reedsburg Youth Hockey association on Tuesday after he admitted to embezzling $144,000 from the Association over the past 10 years. Reedsburg police said they were alerted by board members of the Reedsburg Youth Hockey Association in early May that they believed their treasurer had embezzled a significant amount of money. "I believe they came across a couple of bank statements. A very small amount was being taken out each month, and it was continuing to accumulate over the months and the years," said Reedsburg Police Chief Tim Becker. Detectives interviewed the treasurer, Daniel H. Lehman, 54, of Reedsburg, and he admitted to the thefts, according to Reedsburg police. Becker said Lehman started writing checks to himself, averaging $1,200 a month, 10 years ago. "We'd approached (Lehman) at his home and talked to him about what was going on, and he was very cooperative with us, very remorseful and very forthcoming with all the information that he had," Becker said. Police said Lehman was the sole financial officer for the association and had been taking the funds for approximately 10 years. Lehman told investigators he was attempting to offset personal financial hardships with the association's money and intended on paying the money back, according to Reedsburg police. No board members wanted to comment Tuesday about the arrest. Parent Mike Jones, whose children play hockey, said he pays about $250 every year for each of his sons to play hockey in the association. "You pay for ice time, practice time. Coaches are voluntary -- it's a volunteer club," Jones said. "They love the sport. They've been playing since they were three." Jones said he was shocked to hear of Lehman's arrest and the allegations. "Whether it's $50 or $150,000, it's still wrong. It's still taking from the program," Jones said. Online court records don't show any record of serious financial trouble for Lehman. Lehman is being held in the Sauk County Jail pending a bail hearing. He is expected to appear in court Wednesday.

  Packers' Driver is new 'Dancing' champ

  He already has a Super Bowl ring, and now football star Donald Driver can add the "Dancing With the Stars" mirrorball trophy to his awards collection. The Green Bay Packers receiver won the ABC dance show Tuesday. He and partner Peta Murgatroyd hoisted the glittery prize above their heads as streamers and confetti filled the ballroom. Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins came in second place and Cuban actor William Levy finished third. All three finalists earned perfect scores for their final performances Tuesday. Judges' scores combined with viewer votes determined the winner.

  Man dies in Dodge County motorcycle crash

  A 50-year-old man from Iron Ridge has died in a motorcycle crash in Dodge County. The Wisconsin State Patrol said the crash occurred sometime between Sunday and Monday afternoon, but the exact time of crash is currently unknown. Authorities said a motorcyclist was fatally injured while traveling westbound on Pond Road in the Town of Rubicon. The motorcyclist failed to negotiate a left curve, veered off of the roadway and struck a tree, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol. Authorities on Tuesday identified the victim as Ronald A. Breitkreutz.

  Car wash customers choose between Walker, Barrett

  As Wisconsin residents watch poll numbers in the recall race for governor, an unofficial poll being taken on two sides of Madison is a wash. The poll is arguably the cleanest election you'll find, allowing people to participate voluntarily and anonymously and, so far, it's a toss up. Those who drive up to two Magic Car Wash locations, in Madison and Middleton, are faced with a choice: supporting Democrat Tom Barrett or Republican Gov. Scott Walker. The car wash tallies votes each day and posts them on their signs off Pflaum Road and Parmenter Street, and so far each candidate is winning a location. "Our customers predicted Obama's win. They predicted Walker's last win, but this time I think it's going to be different because, with two locations, one side is favoring Walker and one side is now favoring Barrett by a huge margin," said owner Dan Foor. Foor said he started the car wash poll in 2008 during the presidential election after getting deluged with robo calls and phone polls. "The surveys are so lopsided, I said, 'Somebody should do an anonymous one,'" said Foor. Thus started the "wash n vote," which seems to surprise and amuse just about every customer in line. "I just posted on Facebook that it was quite silly," said Jennifer Grimes of Madison. VIDEO Customers have been taking their civic responsibility quite seriously. Asked if they would wait at the car wash to support their preferred candidate, voters on both sides said yes. "Of course, you got to be truthful about it," said Johnny White of Madison, who was supporting Walker. "I want Scott Walker out, why else?" said Cynthia Hemp, who said she is a state employee and is supporting Barrett. Foor said he thinks the poll is honest because customers simply choose a line and aren't being pushed either way. He said the car wash poll will continue right up through Election Day on June 5.

  Madison Marathon could be canceled due to heat

  Thousands are set to cross the finish line at this year's Madison Marathon, but high temperatures could slow down, or even shut down, the race, come Sunday. The official word is, the race will go on. A final decision will be made at 4 p.m. Friday. In a statement, the Madison Marathon said that in accordance with American College of Sports Medicine guidelines, there is a significant chance the Madison Marathon's full marathon may be canceled due to predicted high temperatures on Sunday. If canceled, all full marathon runners will have the option to run the half marathon. With more than 7,000 runners signed up to participate in Sunday's Madison Marathon, organizers are looking at several factors in determining what to do. When you have thousands of lives to manage during one of the most grueling athletic endeavors, safety is always the top priority, but race officials and runners are cautiously optimistic. "I did four halves (half marathons) and decided that a marathon was the next step," said runner Melissa Johnson. Through countless sidewalk strides, Johnson's push for a marathon finish runs deep in her soles. "I think a lot of running is very personal," said Johnson. "It's a personal goal." VIDEO While Johnson says she's competing against herself, the swelter of Sunday's race may prove to be a worthy opponent. "Personally, I love 50-degree weather," Johnson said. "I run outside all winter. I like the colder weather, so my biggest fear was to have it 90 degrees and humid." "As race director, my first priority is safety, and it's the safety of the runners, the safety of the volunteers," said Keith Peterson of the Madison Marathon. Peterson said he remembers the high heat shutting down 2010's Madison Marathon. And with a forecast set to hit the 90s this weekend, organizers met to discuss safety and emergency procedures. For now, the Madison Marathon is still set to go. "We're projecting that we're going to have a warm, humid day," Peterson said. "But we also know that can change, so there's no final decision today." Jude Sullivan, with University of Wisconsin Sports Medicine, said runners must gauge fatigue responsibly, especially in extreme temperatures. "No matter how good you're feeling at mile marker 10, you have to gauge what your progress is versus how you're feeling and really be honest with yourself," Sullivan said. "We talk about being honest all the time, not just with each other when we're coaching athletes, but really, it's important to be honest with yourself." "You know, your life is kind of built around this training, and then to have it be 90 degrees, it's going to be tough," Johnson said. "But I still want to tackle it and see if I can do it."
