  South Carolina governor campaigning for Walker

  South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is traveling to Wisconsin next week to campaign for Gov. Scott Walker. Haley spokesman Rob Godfrey said Wednesday Haley will make the trip June 1. The Republican Governor's Association is covering her expenses. Walker faces Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett in the June 5 recall election. Godfrey says Walker asked Haley to help him out. Godfrey said Haley agreed because Walker's fight is about more than Wisconsin. He says the recall is about a courageous governor who carries out his promises regardless of the pushback. The effort by Democrats and union leaders to recall Walker began after he successfully pushed to remove the collective bargaining power of public employee unions. Haley frequently bashes unions and considers South Carolina's low union membership rate an economic development tool.

  Milk production continues to improve in Wisconsin

  Milk production continues to improve in Wisconsin and Minnesota, where dairy farmers had a stronger April this year than they did last year. Wisconsin harvested 2.3 billion pounds last month. That's up 4 percent from the total yield in April 2011. In Minnesota, production totaled 770 million pounds, a 1 percent improvement. The overall dairy yield improved in 22 of the 23 major milk-producing states in the nation. Pennsylvania had a 1 percent decrease, in part because there were 5,000 fewer cows. National output was 16.0 billion pounds, an increase of 3 percent. Wisconsin remains firmly entrenched as the nation's second-leading producer, and Minnesota remains in 7th place. As usual, California led the way with 3.6 billion pounds of milk.

  Natural Resources Board allows overnight trail cameras

  The state Natural Resources Board has decided to let people leave trail cameras overnight on public land. People have been prohibited from leaving cameras overnight on Department of Natural Resources-managed land. But outdoor lovers have been pressing the agency to soften its stance as the devices grow in popularity. Earlier this spring the Wisconsin Conservation Congress, a group of influential sportsmen who advise the DNR, approved leaving cameras overnight on DNR land. The Natural Resources Board, which sets policy for the DNR, voted 7-0 at a meeting Wednesday in Madison to allow cameras to remain on agency land overnight.

  Madison Marathon could be canceled due to heat

  Thousands are set to cross the finish line at this year's Madison Marathon, but high temperatures could slow down, or even shut down, the race, come Sunday. The official word is, the race will go on. A final decision will be made at 4 p.m. Friday. In a statement, the Madison Marathon said that in accordance with American College of Sports Medicine guidelines, there is a significant chance the Madison Marathon's full marathon may be canceled due to predicted high temperatures on Sunday. If canceled, all full marathon runners will have the option to run the half marathon. With more than 7,000 runners signed up to participate in Sunday's Madison Marathon, organizers are looking at several factors in determining what to do. When you have thousands of lives to manage during one of the most grueling athletic endeavors, safety is always the top priority, but race officials and runners are cautiously optimistic. "I did four halves (half marathons) and decided that a marathon was the next step," said runner Melissa Johnson. Through countless sidewalk strides, Johnson's push for a marathon finish runs deep in her soles. "I think a lot of running is very personal," said Johnson. "It's a personal goal." VIDEO While Johnson says she's competing against herself, the swelter of Sunday's race may prove to be a worthy opponent. "Personally, I love 50-degree weather," Johnson said. "I run outside all winter. I like the colder weather, so my biggest fear was to have it 90 degrees and humid." "As race director, my first priority is safety, and it's the safety of the runners, the safety of the volunteers," said Keith Peterson of the Madison Marathon. Peterson said he remembers the high heat shutting down 2010's Madison Marathon. And with a forecast set to hit the 90s this weekend, organizers met to discuss safety and emergency procedures. For now, the Madison Marathon is still set to go. "We're projecting that we're going to have a warm, humid day," Peterson said. "But we also know that can change, so there's no final decision today." Jude Sullivan, with University of Wisconsin Sports Medicine, said runners must gauge fatigue responsibly, especially in extreme temperatures. "No matter how good you're feeling at mile marker 10, you have to gauge what your progress is versus how you're feeling and really be honest with yourself," Sullivan said. "We talk about being honest all the time, not just with each other when we're coaching athletes, but really, it's important to be honest with yourself." "You know, your life is kind of built around this training, and then to have it be 90 degrees, it's going to be tough," Johnson said. "But I still want to tackle it and see if I can do it."

  Wisconsin boy competes to be top geography whiz

  A Wisconsin student will be competing again to be the nation's top geography whiz. Vansh Jain from Minocqua is one of 10 finalists of the National Geographic Bee, which will be held Thursday in Washington, D.C. The 13-year-old Boy Scout made the cut after a preliminary round with 54 finalists Tuesday. He was the Wisconsin winner in 2009 and 2010 as well. The finals will be at the National Geographic Society and moderated by "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek. First prize is a $25,000 college scholarship, lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and a trip to the Galapagos Islands.
