  Police identify suspect in University Avenue shooting

  Madison police said that they have identified a 20-year-old Fitchburg man as a suspect in the shooting that injured at least three people last weekend near the University of Wisconsin-campus. SLIDESHOW: See images of shooting scene Police said on Wednesday that detectives have "probable cause" to arrest Darrion D. Brown, 20, of Fitchburg, on a tentative charge of attempted homicide. Investigators said that they believe Brown could be driving a gold-colored 2001 Mercury Sable four-door with Wisconsin license plate 969-TLW. Police said that Brown should be considered armed and dangerous. Authorities said that anyone seeing Brown should call 911. They said that anyone with information on Brown's whereabouts or other details of this case, are asked o contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014. They said that callers can remain anonymous and could be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward. The shooting occurred in the 600 block of University Avenue. Investigators said that they thought an initial altercation led to a man backing up from a group of about 100 people outside of a bar and firing shots at about 1:05 a.m. on Saturday. In a news release on Monday, police said that they believe the shooting was part of "an ongoing dispute between many people" and that multiple guns were present. They said it was unclear how weapons were fired during the incident. The three victims of the shooting were all treated and released from a hospital. Police said the victims included a 26-year-old woman, a 23-year-old man, and an 18-year-old man. One of the victims has been identified as James Madison Memorial High School student-athlete Jamar Morris, WISC-TV reported. Besides the three victims, police said on Monday that they believe an unidentified man was also hurt in the shooting and fled the area. They said the man left behind a blood trail. Investigators said that they're attempting to identify the person.

  Madison police said that they believe "there were multiple guns present" during a weekend shooting that injured at least three people early Saturday morning on University Avenue near the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. SLIDESHOW: See images of shooting scene Police said that based on slowing down surveillance video and talking with witnesses, investigators believe several guns were present and that the shooting was not random. Authorities said that they're trying to determine how many weapons were fired. In a news release on Monday, police said that they believe the shooting was part of "an ongoing dispute between many people." They said that several persons of interest have been identified, but police haven't arrested any suspects. "Folks I'm sure who were a block away didn't even know what happened, but some of the people we're interested in identifying probably ran right past them," said Joel DeSpain, spokesman for the Madison Police Department. The shooting occurred in the 600 block of University Avenue. Meanwhile, Mayor Paul Soglin condemned the shooting as part of a recent outbreak of gun violence happening across the city. "This has been a matter that has been growing for years," Soglin said. "We're not going to solve it in a couple of weeks or a couple of months." Soglin said he would ask Madison's Common Council for an additional $50,000 to fund more weekend police patrols, plus endorse efforts to limit loitering and ban panhandling downtown and near licensed liquor establishments. People facing a life of crime should take advantage of the city's social services or go to jail, Soglin said. "My message to these people is, 'We are going to win. You are going to lose,'" Soglin said. "You can either get out of town now or change your behavior." The mayor called on Madison's school district and Dane County leaders to help the city in breaking the violence. Soglin said he wants neighborhoods to take the lead in the city's crime prevention strategy by focusing on community. However, he's not saying that residents should take matters into their own hands; rather, when there's a problem, or a suspected one, they should call police. In his news conference Monday, Soglin pointed to the Brentwood neighborhood, which is bordered by Sherman Avenue, Warner Park and Lake Mendota on the city's north side. The neighborhood recently had a brush with violence when a man was wounded in a shooting on Brentwood Parkway. Elsewhere, neighbors were intimidated on the sidewalk or victims of petty crimes, according to police. The mayor said he supports the efforts of residents who are trying to mend the gap between its two sets of dwellers: homeowners and renters. "It's not a model that you could just pick up and take into another neighborhood necessarily," said Alderwoman Satya Rhodes-Conway, of District 12. "What they're doing right is they're listening to the folks that live there and they're really trying to build on the assets that are in the neighborhood already." So far that has translated to providing mental health services for children who witnessed the shooting and neighborhood walks and picnics, all backed by regular police patrols. Rhodes-Conway said neighborhood leaders worked hard to partner with the city, which paid off. For example, the Madison Streets Division worked to install more street lighting to help people feel safe.

  Sunbather struck by truck at Madison park

  A 28-year-old woman who was sunbathing was taken to a hospital shortly after noon after being struck by a city of Madison truck Wednesday. The truck was delivering bark and was operating on a grassy area of James Madison Park at 314 E. Gorham St. Police said the victim's condition was not immediately known.   Officials: Unemployment rates drop in Wisconsin cities, counties

  Unemployment rates have dropped in most Wisconsin counties and largest cities, according to state officials. The state Department of Workforce Development reported the latest figures for April on Wednesday, less than two weeks before the June 5 recall election targeting Gov. Scott Walker. Unemployment figures have been a major issue, with Walker relying on one set of numbers that show Wisconsin gained more than 23,000 jobs in 2011 while his opponent Tom Barrett points to another that shows a nearly 34,000 job loss. The latest figures show 30 of the state's largest cities had an unemployment rate decrease last month. Mount Pleasant saw a small increase and Brookfield's was unchanged. Every county except one had an unemployment rate decrease. Iron County's rate increased from 12.7 percent to 12.8 percent.

  Police catch man who stole from downtown street musician

  A street musician had money stolen from his guitar case in downtown Madison on Tuesday night, and police say nearby witnesses helped them catch the thief. The incident happened just after 7 p.m. in the 100 block of King Street . According to police, Julian Parks, 19, of Madison was looking through some CDs in the street musician's guitar case when he grabbed a handful of cash from the case and ran. Police said the musician chased after Parks and caught up with him, but Parks only gave him $1 back. The musician said he suspected Parks had tossed the rest of the money while being chased, police said. The musician went back to his unattended guitar case while witnesses went to police and identified Parks. Police said when officers found him, he had some crumpled up money in his pocket.
